Why would my brass furniture tarnish over time when faced with external elements?

There are many reasons for this to happen: the three main likely ones are humidity, pollution and salt spray. These mostly affect people who live near the sea or near a main road. When these elements become in contact with the furniture it starts to corrode the laquer and therefore starts to break it down and after a while it will become discoloured and will have no protection left. Sharp objects that come into contact with the furniture may scratch them and therefore also damage the protective coating causing the start of tarnishing and discolouration.

What accessories do I need for a lever on backplate?

Lever latch requires: a tubular latch

Lever locks require: 3 or 5 lever sash lock

Bathroom handles require: a bathroom lock (bl) no turn and release is needed as it will have the mechanism included with the backplate.

What accessories do I need for lever on a rose?

Lever latch requires: a tubular latch

Bathroom handles require: a bathroom lock (bl) and a seperate turn and release

Hinge Sizes

Depending on the weight and size of your door and whether the door is solid or hollow please see below as to which you would require.

There are a various range of hinges available, the most commonly used hinges are the double steel washered brass butt 3" hinges - HDSW1 brass or the HDSSW2CP for chrome.

The security of a mortice lock depends on how many levers you require. for eg: 2, 3 or 5 etc, the higher the lever the more security you will have, this is calculated by how many key differs they allow. For a three lever there would normally be no more than 100 key differs and for a five lever they would allow 1000 differs minimum.

Yes. You will need to check that they are of the same finish to your handles, the correct type of lock is being used for example bathroom lock - turn and release whether its on a rose or backplate, and that they still work properly.

Yes. Although there are different types available by different manufacturers in many variations they should all fit according to British Standards, sash locks need to have the same distances between the spindle hole and key hole for them to fit. There are some locks that require certain handles but these are very rare.

Lever latch - this is used on internal doors that you do not wish to lock, tubular latch required.

Lever Lock - this is used on an external door that you wish to lock, lever lock required.

Bathroom lock - this is used on a bathroom door, turn and release mechanism, bathroom lock required.

Turn and release - used on a bathroom door with a lever on rose and not a backplate.
